First riders take to forest canopy cycle path

11:16 17/06/2019

You've cycled through the water in Limburg, now you can cycle through the trees. The province’s latest creative bike experience has opened, 10 metres up in the air among the branches.

The looping path – 700m long and 3m wide – is in the Bosland woodland park, near stage 272 of the region-wide knooppuntcycle network. It’s the province’s latest tourism initiative as it positions itself as a “cycle paradise” following the success of Cycling Through Water, a sunken path through a lake in the Bokrijk nature reserve near Genk that made Time magazine’s list of the World’s Greatest Places in 2018.

“This is the second in a series of new bike experiences spread over the province, through which cyclists can enjoy our beautiful countryside in a unique way,” said Igor Philtjens, chair of Tourism Limburg. “It allows us to show how Limburg continues to innovate as a cycle paradise and puts our province even more firmly on the map.”

Limburg’s next project is Cycling Through Heather, a path through the Hoge Kempen national park, which is a candidate for recognition as Unesco World Heritage. The province hopes it will be ready for the first cyclists at the beginning of 2020. Cycling Underground, in the caves of Kanne, is behind schedule but should be open this autumn.

“Flanders is investing €2.7 million in the various eye-catching projects that are lifting the Limburg cycle network to an even higher level,” Flemish tourism minister Ben Weyts said. “We want to encourage as many people as possible to get on their bikes.”
