First 100% Belgian supermarket to open in Matongé

In the Matongé district of Brussels on Tuesday, the first supermarket offering exclusively Belgian products will hold its grand opening. BelgoMarkt fills 435m2 of retail space in Ixelles' Rue de Dublin with nothing but short-chain, natural products from Belgium. No preservatives or chemicals are used to make the food look nicer or to provide a different taste, say the owners, according to Bruzz.

The store mainly offers fresh products: vegetables, fruit, meat and processed meats, cheeses, fish and bread. But soft drinks, juices, jams, spreads, chocolate, honey, sauces and coffee can also be found there, as well as cosmetics and household products.

All of the products at BelgoMarkt come directly from small, local producers, and 60% are organically grown. The supermarket is able to offer sustainable products at competitive prices by eliminating several middlemen, such as those involved in packaging.

There are already 600 products on the BelgoMarkt shelves, from 90 Belgian suppliers, but the aim is to offer 800 products from 100 suppliers by the end of June, writes Bruzz.

BelgoMarkt is open Tuesday through Sunday, from 9.00 to 19.00.
