Fewer Brussels residents trade car for premium
Since 2006, the Brussels-Capital Region offers a premium to get more cars off of Brussels’ roads and to encourage people to use public transportation in the city. However, the number of people taking advantage of the premium has tapered off in recent years.
The ‘Brussel'Air' premium gives a Cambio (car-sharing scheme) pass, a one-year MIVB/STIB (bus and metro network) subscription and/or a coupon towards buying a bicycle to anyone in Brussels willing to hand over their license. Those who go a step further and have their car destroyed can enjoy the same benefits for a longer time.
Last year, 890 Brussels residents took advantage of the Brussel'Air incentive for getting rid of their car, a figure similar to that in 2012, but two times lower than in 2008.
“The previous government made a political decision to discontinue advertising for the incentive,” Inge Paemen of Mobiel Brussel told brusselnieuws.be.

In order to get this deal, drivers do not have to hand in their driving license. They have to return their licences plates, which proves that they are no longer driving their car. Not quite the same thing. I did this and it has been a good experience.
I don't like driving in general and driving in Brussels is a nightmare.
however, I've been using the so call public transportation system here and it is terrible. Buses are either always late, or they are deviated, or better yet, the drivers drive as if they are in a formula one track.
So for the first time I'm really thinking of getting a car as I'm fed up of wasting so much time waiting for buses or trams.
What I love the most about these retards in stib because that's what they are is how they switch drivers, not in the end terminus, but in the middle of the route. Then they spend 5-10 min gossiping with the driver. No wonder people are not turning in their license plates.
