Fake firefighters collecting door-to-door donations in Brussels

09:33 10/12/2018

Fraudsters are posing as volunteer firefighters and calling at people's homes to ask for an end-of-year donation, Brussels fire brigade has warned.

In the run-up to Christmas it is common for rubbish collectors and postal workers to go from door-to-door for a tip. In some parts of Belgium, volunteer firefighters also do the rounds - but not in the capital.

Brussels fire brigade spokesman Walter Derieuw said that, every year, imposters pretended to be volunteer firefighters to collect money. "The firefighters in Brussels are not volunteers and they do not ask for gifts," he said.

The Brussels Firefighters' Union produces a charity Christmas calendar, called Hall of Flame, with the proceeds going to charities helping children recover from serious burns injuries.

"But these calendars are on sale at specific locations - they are never sold door-to-door," the spokesman added.
