Expat Tax Status Changing Company

Question

If you work for an American company European HQ in Belgium with an expat Tax status and change company to another American company European HQ in Belgium do you retain your expat tax status or do you automatically lose it and get taxed at the local rate or do you have to reapply to have expat tax status?

Troll

As you change job, the new employer needs to apply again for the expats status, eg it is not automatically carried over. Considering they are now doing audits of all expats that has been more than 10 years in the country, this might also impact.

The status is linked to your employment and your new employer would have to reapply if you change jobs. However the definition for expat is that 'the centre of his economic activities is outside of Belgium' and in practice this means you can't obtain an expat status if you are resident in Belgium when you accept a job offer. There might be some exceptions on this (short term contract, family living elsewhere?), but you should consult a specialist to check.
