€7.5 million for more cameras around Brussels

13:21 18/01/2026

Brussels will receive €7.5 million for new police surveillance cameras, putting its budget on par with that of Antwerp.

Some €25 million in federal funds will be distributed among other major Belgian cities and police zones in the country, according to interior minister Bernard Quintin (MR).

“It’s my duty to guarantee the safety of all Belgians, from De Panne to Arlon,” said Quintin. “That’s why all police zones are being supported.”

The reinforcement of the camera network, part of the Major Cities Plan, was initially given a budget of €20 million, which was later increased to €25 million.

Of the €7.5 million earmarked for Brussels, €3 million will be allocated to the Brussels-Capital/Ixelles police zone.

Brussels public prosecutor Julien Moinil had previously underlined the need to significantly strengthen the camera network in the capital, according to Quintin.

Also receiving €7.5 million is Antwerp, "where the greatest impact of organised crime and drug trafficking is concentrated", Quintin said.

Another €5 million will be divided between Charleroi, Namur, Ghent, Liège and Mons, with €1 million per city.

The final €5 million will be allocated to the other police zones in the country, based on the number of operational staff.
