The Eternal Daughter by British director Joanna Hogg to be screened at Bozar on 22 September

13:02 15/09/2023

Critically-acclaimed psychological mystery The Eternal Daughter is screened at Bozar on 22 September, followed by a Q&A with its British writer-director Joanna Hogg.

The 2022 gothic ghost story set in rural Wales stars Tilda Swinton in the double role of the filmmaker and her elderly mother.

The relationship is loosely modelled on Hogg’s own life; a continuation of her exploration of the family dynamic portrayed in her earlier screen works The Souvenir (2019) and The Souvenir Part II (2021). Both of these films are screened at Bozar on 24 September.

While the previous titles featured Swinton playing opposite her daughter Honor Swinton Byrne, the newer work sees the Oscar winner performing both mother and daughter roles, Rosalind and Julie.

The setting for the film is an eery and mist-covered hotel that where Rosalind spent her childhood. In bringing her mother to the country house for her birthday, Julie plans to work on her latest screenplay.

Although she hopes to find inspiration for her new film and deepen her relationship with her mother, the creepy experience and digging into their shared past illuminates the emotional complexity of their relationship.

The Eternal Daughter was voted one of the best films of 2022 by critics. It was produced by Martin Scorsese who has supported and produced Hogg’s films since 2013.

Joanna Hogg (1960-) made her directorial and screenwriting debut with the film Unrelated in 2007. It was followed by Archipelago (2010) and Exhibition (2013) before The Souvenir duo.

The screening on Friday evening is preceded by the short film Présages (2023), and followed by a Q&A with Hogg, moderated by Belgian film critic Hugues Dayez (RTBF). It goes on general release in Belgian cinemas from 27 September.
