Public Image Ltd - "This is PiL"

John Lydon’s Sex Pistols may have been the most influential ‘one-album band’ ever but, on artistic merit, they do not come anywhere near his next, freshly resurrected project, Public Image Ltd.

Twenty years after the uneven That What Is Not, this ninth studio album finds Lydon in sublime aggressive/reflective form. On the menacing It Said That, he even sounds positively, threateningly Pinteresque. The current line-up of guitarist Lu Edmonds (formerly of The Damned and The Mekons), drummer Bruce Smith (ex-Pop Group) and relative newbie Scott Firth keep it expertly sober behind Lydon’s unmistakeable sneers. Terra-Gate (the album's standout track) and Deeper Water easily rank among the finest material Lydon has ever recorded. Give that man a knighthood – and fast.
