Electric car sales doubled in Belgium
In 2014, more than 1,000 new electric vehicles were registered in Belgium, twice as many as last year, reports De Tijd based on figures from the Belgian Federation of Car and Two-wheeler Industries (FEBIAC). The success of fully electric-powered vehicles in Belgium is primarily due to the sale of the Tesla Model S (pictured), the first premium electric sedan, which has 40% of the market share with nearly 400 vehicles sold.
Hybrid car sales in Belgium increased by a remarkable 32% in 2014, with nearly 8,000 new cars sold. Among the hybrid cars, Japanese car maker Toyota accounts for 82% of the market share with its luxury brand Lexus.
AVERE, the European Association for Battery, Hybrid and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles notes, however, that Belgium still lags far behind other countries when it comes to electric and hybrid transport. According to AVERE, sustainable transport receives insufficient funding in Belgium.
