Eight protesters arrested at Kleine Brogel military base

11:51 11/06/2018

Eight protesters were arrested after illegally entering the Kleine Brogel military base in Limburg on Sunday morning.

All the protesters were part of Agir pour la paix, an activist group that wants to rid Belgium of all stored nuclear weapons.

In a press release, the group said that the activists “symbolically” removed US nuclear weapons that had “illegally” been stockpiled at the air base for more than 60 years and passed them on to fellow activists posted outside the base before they were arrested by the police on the take-off runway for F-16 fighter jets.

The group intends to hand over the fake nukes to the political leaders and heads of state who will attend the NATO meeting to take place in Brussels July 11 and 12. Agir pour la paix will also organise protests during the NATO summit as part of its Nuke Free Zone campaign, according to a press statement released by the group.

The group of activists who were arrested included Zoé Genot, a member of the Brussels parliament for the French Greens (Ecolo). The arrested activists could face up to five years in prison.
