Eddy Merckx out of intensive care after bike accident

20:37 14/10/2019

Belgian cycling champion Eddy Merckx has been discharged from intensive care after a fall on his bike at the weekend.

The 74-year-old was taken to hospital in Dendermonde on Sunday, reportedly suffering from a severe head injury.

Merckx, a five-time Tour de France winner, has a history of heart problems and uses a pacemaker, prompting doctors to carry out extra checks as a precaution.

He has now been transferred to a regular hospital room. It is not yet clear when he can leave.

Serge Vermeiren, a close friend, told reporters on Monday: "He is better but still has to rest."

Merckx took centre stage during this summer's Tour de France Grand Départ, which set off from Brussels to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his first yellow jersey.
