Dutch protest against Belgian nuclear power plants

11:10 23/05/2016

More than 1,000 people on Sunday marched in Maastricht, the Netherlands, as part of an international demonstration for the closure of the Belgian nuclear plant in Tihange. The protesters are worried about the safety of the nuclear power plant, which is located about 40km from Maastricht, reports De Standaard.

Representatives of environmental organisations in Germany and Belgium also took part in the demonstration. The protesters were addressed by Dutch MP Liesbeth van Tongeren, who talked about the importance of EU regional cooperation.

According to van Tongeren, it is wrong for countries to build nuclear power plants on the borders without the bordering country having a say in important issues such as keeping outdated plants open, as is the case in Tihange.

It seems that the only ones not worried about the faulty Belgian nuclear facilities are the Belgian authorities. How reassuring, not...
