Dutch language courses double in Brussels

16:26 05/07/2018

Flanders’ Centre for Adult Education in Brussels has more than doubled the number of Dutch language courses it is offering this summer in order to keep up with demand. While enrolment in Flanders is also on the rise, it hasn’t increased at nearly the rate as in Brussels.

The additional classes are all for those who have already taken a beginner’s course. Previously only beginner’s level were offered in the summer.

“I’m waiting for the recognition of my diploma, so in the meantime, I’m trying to improve my Dutch,” Zouheir, a physician from Algeria, told VRT when a reporter visited a Dutch class in Brussels. “I want to be ready to enter into a research programme in pharmaceuticals. Brussels is bilingual, so to work here, you have to be bilingual.”

The school has several locations in Brussels where Dutch as a second language is taught, but other options are also available. A complete list of classes can be consulted at Huis van het Nederlands, or House of Dutch.

Flemish education minister Hilde Crevits has provided €440,000 more in funding to this summer’s Dutch courses than last summer. The total investment for Flanders and Brussels is €1.2 million.

I personally prefer learning Dutch with a language learning app. I'm currently using Mondly, especially their VR and AR modules which makes the whole experience a lot more interactive.
