Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians reveal what annoys them the most

20:04 20/09/2016

Driving in Belgium takes some getting used to, as any expat will tell you. But a new survey shows that motorists think it’s the cyclists who are reckless. And pedestrians don’t get off lightly, either.

The survey was published by the Belgian Institute for Road Safety (IBSR) to launch the annual Mobility Week. It asked a simple question to three groups of road users – drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. What are the things that annoy you most in traffic?

So, what sends drivers round the bend?
- Pedestrians who cross the road without looking.
- People who cross anywhere they want, even when there’s a pedestrian crossing nearby.
- Crossing on a red light.
- Walking in the road when there’s a pavement.
- Walking in dark clothes at night.

Next came the top five complaints from pedestrians.
- Standing on a pedestrian crossing, but no one bothers to stop.
- Drivers who use their phone behind the wheel.
- Parking on the pavement.
- Opening a car door without looking, something that also wound up cyclists.
- Parking on a pedestrian crossing.

Then the cyclists joined in.
- Parking on a cycle lane.
- Driving too close to a cyclist.
- Changing direction without taking account of a cyclist.
- Turning right without giving way to a cyclist.

So why is it that everyone is angry on our roads? "You can compare traffic with a jungle," explained traffic psychologist Gerard Tertoolen in Het Nieuwsblad. "It’s about survival."

Once we’re out in traffic, we’re fighting for our lives, he says. "As a result, our brains switch to their most primitive function. We hardly reflect – our impulses take control."

The road safety authority is now trying to encourage everyone to be less aggressive on the roads. "Courteous towards one another" is the slogan they would like us to adopt.

I'm usually a pedestrian, but drive sometimes. I find pedestrians slowly cross on pedestrian crossings, no sense of urgency, sometimes missing the crossing by metres. The don't look up and acknowledge the driver, even with a smile. Some stand and chat by a crossing, unaware that drivers are stopping and confused as to whether they want to cross or not. Awareness and acknowledgements would be good here.

Pedestrians don't need to acknowledge you for stopping. It's astounding that a driver would think they should. You have not done them a favour, you have simply followed the law. As to standing around by a crossing while not needing to use it, yes that is annoying but what the hell can you expect when some genius puts a bloody bus stop at the end of it, also encouraging people to walk out in front of the bus to meet an overtaking car! Bloody fools.

In short, there are so many crossings in frequently stupid places, people simply stop respecting them. Oh, and crossing without APPEARING to look is just one method of making car drivers stop. Otherwise the driver is likely to take priority and make you stop on the pavement for him. To be honest, road users of all kinds leave a lot to be desired here.

Total lack of courtesy towards other drivers and reckless speed are what makers Belgian drivers among the worst and most dangeous in Europe.
