Doctors’ office opens in Brussels Central Station

12:07 17/06/2015

The country’s first medical practice housed in a metro station opened this week in Brussels. The practice in Central Station is intended for the use of commuters and local residents.

“People no longer take the time to go to the doctor, so it’s essential for us to go to the patient,” said Annick Vanderstraeten of Brussels Quality Medical, which operates the clinic (pictured) together with the medical group Chirec. “If necessary, we can refer patients to a hospital or one of our other specialised centres. We will also provide patients’ family doctors of any results within 48 hours.”

Plans to open a medical clinic in the metro station were announced earlier in the year, and the Belgian Association of Medical Syndicates expressed some misgivings. “We are moving steadily away from global care for the patient towards a system of medical shopping,” spokesperson Luc Herry said. “I don’t believe medicine for people in a hurry can produce good care.”

The practice is open from 6.30 to 19.30 on weekdays, and on Saturday from 9.00 to 13.00. A consultation costs €33. If the project is a success, Brussels Quality Medical has plans for a further two locations in Brussels.
