Do you love Brussels so much you’d marry it?

Brussels Danst. Brussels Trouwt

If you are truly enamoured with the EU capital, 11 July will be the day to officially declare your love for the city! For 2018, the Flemish Community Day celebration Vlaanderen Feest, Brussel Danst, is  centered around a wedding-themed party, Brussel Trouwt - or Brussels Marries.

Visitors can ‘get married’ to the city at the Brussels City Hall, take mock wedding photos with a limousine and enjoy a wedding party during De Grote Brussel Trouwt Trouwshow. There will also be a bouquet throwing contest and more. The day will end in the Grand‘Place with a performance by De Kreuners.

The wedding celebration organisers are working with CirQ, known for the popular Ghent summer festival Gentse Feesten. “The relationship with Brussels is a lifelong romance for some and more of a turbulent love affair with ups and downs or a blossoming new love for others,” said Roel Leemans, general manager of Muntpunt, organiser of the festival. “We notice every day that, in essence, most Flemish people have a genuine love for their capital city. So it's high time to tie the knot.”

For the programming, Muntpunt has joined up with a variety of Brussels-based and Flemish organisations, such as the Beursschouwburg, Vlaams Radio Koor and Ancienne Belgique, making the festival a collaborative effort.

“We've again been able to put together a fantastic programme for Flemish Community Day on 11 July, with classics that have proven successful over the years,” said Svan Gatz, Minister for Culture, Media, Youth and Brussels, in a press release.

“This time, we've also added the perfect ingredients that make every wedding day unforgettable, like a huge wedding reception and a great dance party with a real wedding DJ. Because at “Vlaanderen Feest, Brussel Danst”, you can declare your eternal love for Brussels as if at a real wedding.”

Brussel Touwt is just one celebration on the annual community day. For the fifth year in a row, the Brussels Dance Dance Battles will host an international competition in four categories: All Styles, All Styles under 16, Breakdance and Afro-Caribbean. There will also be guided walks and bike tours of the city.

This is the sixth year for ‘Vlaanderen Feest, Brussel Danst’ and, as in previous years, will be free to the public. For those missing the action, Radio 2's live broadcast of De Vlaamse 100 will be playing Flemish hits all throughout the day.
