DKV health insurance and Hospitalia plus

Question

Hi

I have been a DKV customer for years for hospital treatment. I signed up as I was told it was the 'Rolls Royce' of cover.

It costs FAR more than Hospitalia plus from my mutuel.

I once called DKV and asked what where their benefits, and they expected me to accept the statement that they were the 'Rolls Royce' of policies. Seems that's a marketing thing of theirs!

I've made one claim, it was settled, but what a hassle and MONTHS to settle. Hardly RR service! Luckily I could pay the bill and then wait for ages for the refund.

Im in my mid 50's and do want to feel good security to cover any hospital visit, and if its DKV, so be it. But I wonder if Hospitalia plus will give me that peace of mind and lighten the wallet!

Could anyone, please, discuss the pros and cons of both?

Thanks in advance

Jon

Yes, DKV is considerably more expensive. The only benefit I know of (compared with other companies) is that it will give you world wide coverage even though you travel extensively. One other company I looked at would only provide coverage for up to three months outside Belgium. I believe that you can even leave Belgium and take your DKV coverage with you to a new country, although I'm not 100% positive on this point.

I am surprised that you had to pay your hospital bill. I have DKV too, since 2007, and have been hospitalized. I immediately sent in the papers to get the hospital bill covered by DKV. Only the aftercare costs I had to advance, get mutuelle reimbursement and the difference was paid by DKV within little time. Apart from the fact that you have world wide coverage, which is a great benefit if you travel often, you also get a private room (not with Hospitalia), and if you have a serious illness you can which has better medical care in another country, you can opt for that. I am with OZ too, and have the option of Hospitalia, but I don't for the reasons mentioned here. It is a choice... Now if someone knows for sure if you can take your DKV coverage with you when moving to another country, I would like to know about that. Because right now I am stuck with residence in Belgium as I have pre-existing conditions that will not be covered anymore if I take out a new policy elsewhere.

Thanks for the feedback

So if you are OK with a non-private room and don't travel more than 3 months then DKV sounds expensive. I'll check if there is a supplement for a single room. But I'd say that for most people who dont need the above, you are paying a premium for something you dont use.

I had to wait months from DKV, and was really disappointed, I also had to badger them through my agent to get some response. Argument it was holiday season. Sorry a Rolls Royce needs to work impecabbly on a trip to the seaside! :)

I asked for the ombudsman to make a complaint, but didnt get around to it. Maybe I was just unlucky.

Thanks
Jon

I don't know about the competition but DKV's service seems far from premium. I have yet to manage to reach them on the phone, and they don't seem to reply to emails or requests sent through their contact page either. That's a problem if you need urgent information. So if I weren't tied to them through my company's group insurance I'd look elsewhere, especially if they're pricier than others.
