Divorce
am considering divorce. would like to speak to an attorney regarding what my rights are. It should be a very simple split--no kids--but I have no job and will need some money to get started in new single life, including repatriation to my home country. Just want a lump sum, not ongoing support. Need to find out what is fair and reasonable. Not sure if a notaire or attorney is who I need to speak with. Need recommendations for English speaking whether an attorney or notaire. cheers
sparkles, as a first point of call, you should probably start with a notaire. They can deal with a divorce assuming that it's an agreed divorce. If you and your partner can agree on how to divorce, and what to split between the two of you, then it is essentially just an administrative procedure.
Of course, if you can't agree between the two of you what is an equitable split, then you would need a lawyer (or both would need a lawyer each) who would negotiate an agreement between the two of you.
What is "fair and reasonable" will of course depend on a wide range of factors which it's unlikely anyone here can answer for you.
You could try www.juliacrossland.com. It's not a personal recommendation, just that I know that she's a UK registered solicitor working in family law in Brussels.
Hi, Having just been through it I would recommend Maitre Vis. Excellent English and very helpful. Aline Vis , Good luck
