Desire to do voluntary work with animals

Question

I would like to do voluntary work with animals (e.g. in a shelter, with a vet, or some other properly established organisation). My reason for this is because I love animals and would like to be able to help them out.

Has anyone any such experience and/or advice or references?

Thanks a lot.

Hello Michele. There are a few links at the end of this article that might be helpful: http://www.xpats.com/pay-it-forward-volunteering-belgium

There are also nature help centres across Flanders that use volunteers. Don't know if you speak Dutch or would be required to.

Actually I live in the Brabant wallon area and am looking for something close by. I don't speak Dutch, just English and French.
Thanks for the two answers (Lmbsie and Sally), both of which were very helpful.

All the shelters welcome volunteers. Help Animals is near the ring in Anderlecht as is Veeweyde. I know that you can walk the dogs at Help Animals which is great if you don't have the chance of adopting one.
