Defour highest paid player in Belgium

Belgian international footballer Steven Defour yesterday signed a five-year contract with RSC Anderlecht. In the end it was not PSV Eindhoven, but the Belgian club that pulled the 25-year-old center midfielder away from FC Porto for €6 million (potentially rising to €6.5 million including fees). Anderlecht has European ambitions and a chance to take home the league title for the fourth time.

Defour’s annual salary at Anderlecht will be around €1.5 million, making Defour the highest paid player in Belgium, surpassing Aleksandar Mitrović as the most expensive player ever.

"This was anything but an easy choice," Defour said of his transfer to the arch-rival of his former club, Standard Liège. "PSV could not come to an agreement with Porto," said Defour, “while Anderlecht made a huge effort to get me."
