De Morgen scraps the term ‘immigrant’

The newspaper De Morgen will no longer use the term allochtoon, meaning ‘immigrant’ or ‘person of foreign heritage’. According to editor Wouter Verschelden (pictured), the term is "stigmatising" and "exclusive" and does not belong in good journalism. Following the reports on the riots in response to the anti-Islam film Innocence of Muslims, and in view of nearing local elections, De Morgen hopes to bring into question our use of language in reference to foreigners. "Is this country for everyone who lives in it or not?” Verschelden wrote on the front page of the newspaper.
