Customer data compromised in hacks at Basic Fit and Booking.com
Customer data has been compromised following cyberattacks targeting fitness chain Basic Fit and travel platform Booking.com, both firms have announced.
Basic Fit confirmed that a hack affected its systems, with data from a large number of members potentially accessed. The company said it acted quickly to contain the breach.
“The hack was stopped within minutes of its discovery,” Basic Fit said in a statement.
The fitness chain did not specify exactly how many customers were affected, but reports indicate that data linked to millions of members in Europe may have been involved including an estimated 150,000 to 200,000 Belgian members.
The nature of the stolen data has not been fully disclosed.
Meanwhile, Booking.com warned customers about an increase in fraud attempts linked to compromised accounts, particularly involving phishing messages sent in the name of hotels or the platform itself.
A phishing message is a term for a fraudulent message disguised as a trustworthy source to steal sensitive information or install malware into a device.
“We will never ask you to share credit card details via email, phone, SMS, or WhatsApp,” the company said in a statement.
“We will never ask you to make a bank transfer that deviates from the payment terms in your booking confirmation.”
Booking.com urged users to remain cautious. “If you receive an email that appears to have been sent by the accommodation or Booking.com, be vigilant before clicking on a link,” the company added.
