Cost of repairing a lock?

Question

Hi,

We had an attempted break in on our house. The lock was broken. I've just had a locksmith out to replace the lock(standard lock) and have been charged €300 for it. It was not an emergency as the door was still locked. Does this seem excessive?

Secondly, the police came to look at it and said that they would send a report so that we could claim back the cost of replacing the lock from our insurers. Has anyone actually experienced this(i.e. been able to claim back the full cost of repairing the lock?)

Are you tenants or owners?

If you are tenants, have you just taken the mandatoty insurance specified in your rental contract (this one generally covers only your civil responsibility as tenants), or have you also negotiated a higher fee to be covered against theft?
