Cost of home insurance

Question

Can anybody point me towards a website which has information on the average cost of home insurance in Belgium?

Most of the major insurance providers, your bank for example, and Ethias have simulators on their websites. I found that prices vary little, so if you just want a typical cost just run through one of them.

Actually I still don't understand why you need to ensure an apartment in Belgium, except if it's for burglary. Otherwise the building insurance already covers the damage due to fire, flood, etc. The belongings (furniture, etc.) can be insured on top but usually there's a high self-risk (3,000 in ING).

The building insurance covers damage due to fire etc where the problem originates elsewhere than in your apartment. If it originates in your apartment then it is down to your insurance. Furthermore, if you check your contract you will see that you are obliged to take out relevant insurance.

These arrangements may not be the same as the ones that you have been used to in another country, but this is Belgium and the rules are different.

If you are in a large building where there is a copropriete looking after all of the apartments you should check with the person who administers the building. We have an apartment in a building where there are 15 other apartments. We have insurance only on the contents of our apartment. All liability, fire, water damage etc. is covered by the general policy which all apartment owners contribute to in the charges.

BNP Paribas Fortis also cover home insurance, so you might like to ask them for a free quote.
