Complete guide to Christmas markets in Belgium
The final part in our series on yuletide festivities around the country - December 14
The spiritual home of Christmas markets in Europe is Germany, where the tradition goes back to the Middle Ages. And in the eastern cantons of Belgium nearly every town stages wonderful German-influenced events full of local specialities. So, for an authentic experience, head east on the trail of spiced biscuits, glühwein and twinkling stars. But if time is of the essence in the Christmas bustle, there are plenty of options closer to home.

Christmas markets, Brussels
Until January 6
For an instant fix of festive spirit, look no further than Brussels’ own extravaganza: Winter Wonders. Beyond the controversial electronic ‘tree’ in the Grand’Place (due to be dismantled on December 28 for fears of damage by New Year’s Eve revellers), the historic square is illuminated by no fewer than 1,600 LED fairy lights. The market extends to the Place du Vieux Marché aux Grains and Place Sainte-Catherine, with its traditional ice-skating rink and big wheel. A series of events animates the market, including music from Balkan Trafik and an exhibition of China’s legendary Terracotta Army at the Bourse. Hundreds of festooned chalets ply their wares and serve up mulled wine and the usual array of tempting seasonal bites.
