Commemorative work unveiled at Schuman

11:19 23/03/2017

The public memorial commissioned to Brussels artist Jean-Henri Compère was unveiled near the Schuman Roundabout on Wednesday, exactly one year after the terror attacks in Brussels Airport and Maelbeek metro station. The artwork is located in the pedestrianised section of Rue de la Loi, between Schuman and Cinquantenaire. It was unveiled during a memorial ceremony in which King Philippe made a speech, as did a number of survivors, reports Bruzz.

The monument, measuring 20 metres long and two metres high, consists of two plates of glazed stainless steel, both of which curl up at the end to face each other. The sculptor named the monument Wounded But Still Standing in Front of the Inconceivable. It holds a powerful message against violence, according to the artist, as the space between the two parts leaves room for dialogue and hope.
