City of Brussels shows solidarity with Iranian people with banner in Place de Brouckère
With a giant banner in Place de Brouckère, the city of Brussels expresses its support and solidarity with the Iranian people.
The banner, hung on the façade of the Hotel Continental, serves as a reminder that the struggle of the Iranian people should not leave anyone untouched, according to Brussels mayor Philippe Close (PS).
For several weeks now, demonstrators have been taking to the streets in Iran. The Iranian regime has been particularly brutal, resulting in a crackdown that has caused thousands of fatalities. According to latest figures, the death toll is estimated at least 3,000, but many believe the number is much higher.
It isn’t the first time the city has expressed support to foreign causes. Last year, it displayed the peace flag at the City Hall in the Grand Place to denounce both the war in Ukraine and Israel’s violence in Gaza.
Meanwhile, the banner in Place de Brouckère isn’t the first show of support linked to Iran, reports Bruzz. “Back in 2022, we already hung a banner in support of Mahsa Amini [who was killed by a member of the Iranian security forces for not wearing her headscarf properly]. Today, we once again stand with the Iranian people and all those who, risking their lives, peacefully stand up for their human rights,” explained the Brussels mayor.
“The Iranian people, and especially the women at the forefront, are showing admirable courage in the face of this deadly repression. Their fight for freedom is a cry the world can no longer ignore. By showing our support, the City of Brussels confirms its strong commitment to equality, democracy and dignity for all,” added Delphine Houba (PS), the Brussels alderwomen for equal opportunities.
