Chinese official fired for not returning from Belgian holiday

12:23 12/09/2013

A Chinese official has been sacked after deciding not to return to her post in China and to enjoy married life in Belgium instead, reports eChinaCities.com. Wang Weihua, 45, from Guangzhou, was the deputy chief of the foreign investment and agricultural resources audit office – a position she had held for 25 years. On February 18 this year, Wang received permission to visit Belgium for six months. The purpose of her trip was to visit relatives, travel and get married. On August 1, when her holiday came to an end, she handed in her resignation from Belgium. However, since she did not follow the proper resignation protocol of handing in the resignation in person in Guangzhou, the audit bureau refused to grant her the resignation. On August 21, when Wang had already overstayed her holiday by 15 days, the audit bureau notified her that she had been sacked from the post. Chinese media have been downplaying (or blatantly not mentioning) reports that she actually tried to resign before she overstayed her permitted leave. In what a cat and mouse game between employer and employee, the audit bureau insisted on having the final say.
