Cheap distilled water for steam iron

Question

Where can I buy distilled water bottles of 1-5 liters cheaper than Delhaize's 2 €/L? Second question, is distilled water harmful to steam generator irons? The amount of scaling from tap water is horrendous and hard to get rid of and stuff coming out of the vents is not doing the clothes a favor. Information on the internet is contradictory, so any personal experience?

We have big jugs of distilled water but I don't remember where they are from.

Our Philips steam iron manual says that it is not necessary to put in distilled water. (And if I remember correctly, it is discouraged). We have no problems so far, but our water is softened.

If you are worried about your water being too hard, you could run the water for your iron through a Brita-type water filter. Brita at least softens water as it filters it. Or use cheap spring water.

Hi,

You don't need to put distilled water in your iron, but it's a good idea to use de-mineralised water, which is much cheaper. You should be able to find it in Carrefour or Delhaize. I use 5 litre containers from Carrefour. I don't remember the price but it wasn't very much.

I collect rain water in buckets; store the rainwater in empty plastic bottles and then pour into my steam iron.

Id go with the rain water option. Can't beat nature's water.

Thanks everyone, got me deionized from Brico.
Rain water is actually a bit acidic (pH 5-6) because carbondioxide dissolves in it as it is coming down.
