CD review: Madé J. - "Das Rumble"

Known to many Brussels rockabilly fans as occasional guest guitarist with Runnin’ Wild, Madé J. finally takes centre stage with his first solo album.

Over 13 songs (14 with the ‘secret’ track), the Bali-born guitar slinger displays solid songwriting skills ranging from straightforward garage to bluesy rock’n’roll, owing a great debt to NYC demigod Jon Spencer. Sadly, the rather tame production lets him down; Madé’s guitar playing, so wild and dirty on stage, sounds shockingly restrained in the studio. Only the double bass-driven Your Pet and I’m A Fool hint at what could have been a killer album.
