Car prices in Belgium and other european countries

Question

Hi,

Was recently visiting a colleague in the Netherlands and he was on his way to Spain to buy a car and bring it back there as he said it was way cheaper to get them there even after paying the import fees.

Out of curiosity, I visited the Belgian sites (honda, toyota, etc) and the Spanish sites for cars, and indeed, sometimes for some models, there is 1000-2000 euro difference between the same models of cars.

I don't have a car, but I have met some French colleagues who actually come from France to Belgium to buy their cars, so I was under the impression that cars were fairly price here, but I guess that's not always the case.

Question is, if somebody buys a car in another country, what fees are there to be paid to the Belgian authorities?

Also, is there a website in Belgium that has this info?

And finally, is there a better time of year to buy a new car in Belgium? For example, in the USA you might get some good deals when the new year models are coming in and some dealerships try to get rid of last year's inventory. Some dealerships will have special sales to try to lure people to buy the last remaining cars on the lot from the year before. Does that concept exist in Be?

Indeed there are price differences across the EU, but a) they are much smaller now, also thanks to EU action and b) standard equipments may vary across countries (as an example, all VW Golfs sold in Belgium come with an anti-collision radar, which is not the case in other countries and tells you something about drivers in Belgium).

This website has a lot of info on legislation and procedures:

PS best time to buy a car here is during Salon de l'Auto in January:

I wouldn't bother importing for 1K-2K euros difference.

Mind you, importing a car into Belgium is complicated and if the car is <6 months old, you have to pay full VAT.
