car insurance

Question

Dear All

I have 2 questions

1. Im looking for a car insurance company that provides insurance only when you use your car- eg 1-2 times per week. I was told this is available in Belgium but haven't found any companies that do this.

2. Im also looking for a good preferably free of charge insurance broker. Also can someone explain how they work?

Many thanks in advance for your replies!!

Emille B.

I don't know any insurance company that insures by the day , but there are plenty which do insurance per kilometer, the more you drive the more you pay.
Like Actel , KBC , corona direct, etc;, often you can find the rate on their websites , as most have on-line calculators , to figure what suits you best.

2. Beware of free of charge insurance brokers, the money has to come from somewhere.......or someone.

1) Who told you that??? Legally, you car has to be insured all the time - not just when you drive it.

2) If a broker was "free of charge", tell me - how would they stay in business???

I have no idea about the first question and I would be interested to know how you think it could work.
@J
Brokers - insurance, mortgage, whatever - stay in business by earning commission from the companies with which they place business. If they also charge the customer, they get paid twice.
I've been here 20 years and have never dealt directly with an insurance company nor have I ever paid a broker for their service. There is no way of knowing whether insurers adjust their premiums to reflect the commission which they pay to brokers and agents but you can be assured that they always pay commission.

Avoid brokers at all costs. In fact, they are simply another cost. It is in their interest to sell you the most expensive insurance package they can, with the most add-ons unsuitable to your situation. By avoiding a broker you will
- save on the commission they earn (either from you, or from the insurance company, or both)
- save on the insurance itself, by getting a package suited to you.

@KASSEISTAMPER
Ah - well I assumed that it was commissions that the OP was thinking of. No, I have never heard of an additional fee for arranging a policy.

@PPHILIPS
Err - what insurance company do you know of that does not operate on commission?
How the hell do you navigate through the Belgian insurance minefield without advice from a broker?
Normally, every insurance contract has commission built in, so the cost should be the same regardless of the broker, however a good, independent broker has the expertise, not only to advise, but also to know which companies to approach to try to get you the best deal.

I would avoid brokers aswell.. Have done this once and paid way too much! The commissions they take are way too much. If you want to get decent information about car insurances in Belgium I would advice to take a look at this website: https://moving-tobelgium.be/car-insurance-belgium/ . I took their advice and took out an car insurance via touring Assurances which I can recommend.
