You will be given a form by the seller, a pink slip which contains all the relevant details of the car. It's called "demande d'immatriculation d'une voiture".

When you receive it, shop around for an insurance provider. When you find one, give them the pink slip and they will do the rest via internet (i.e. ordering the number plate for you etc etc). You will receive the back license plate in your post box and you will have to make a copy for the front of the car (any Mister Minit or similar shop does that).

In terms of additional documents to ask the owner/seller:

- Controle technique (MOT) and "Car Pass" certificate for sale detailing mileage history and mechanical conditions
- "Certificat de conformité" from the car manufacturer
- Maintenance records if any
