Bus driver attacked with syringe

12:51 24/07/2013

A bus driver was assaulted with a syringe feared to have belonged to a drug user, in an attack that took place on Monday night, De Gazet van Antwerpen reports. The driver had stopped at the De Lijn terminus in Deurne. When he came out of the bathroom, he was assaulted by a man who took his wallet and stole €15. When the driver tried to get his wallet back, the attacker plunged a syringe in his hand. "The driver certainly won’t return to work until August 19," said Koen Peeters, spokesman for De Lijn. He will be tested for HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C, even though doctors have said the risk of contamination was very low. The attacker, meanwhile, is still on the run.
