Buildings on central Antwerp square evacuated

10:06 01/10/2014

A branch of the McDonald’s fast-food restaurant on the Groenplaats square in central Antwerp was evacuated after passers-by noticed a strong smell of gas and alerted the fire service. The smell was coming from the basement of the McDonald’s building.

The restaurant and upper floors, as well as two neighbouring buildings, were evacuated and a safety perimeter established around the street while the source of the smell was investigated.

Gas supplier Eandis arrived to discover that a leak had occurred on the installation of a new meter during renovations in a neighbouring building. The leak was repaired, and the safety zone lifted.

In related news, Antwerp city council has prepared a project statement for the renovation of Groenplaats (pictured), which is being given to five developers bidding for the job. The plans are extensive: the square must be replanted with trees, be a venue for various events and serve as a place simply to pass the time.

Benches, terraces and other seating will be installed. The statue of Rubens in the centre of the square will remain in place, and the renovations must highlight heritage buildings surrounding the square.

The names of the five development teams will be announced later in the year, and they will be given until March to submit their proposals. Works on the square will begin in the spring of 2017.
