Brussels' wealthiest district is Le Vivier d'Oie

New figures published by the the Brussels Institute for Statistics and Analysis (BISA) reveal the average income per tax return in each of the 118 districts of Brussels. The district Le Vivier d'Oie in Uccle is by far the richest with an average of €65,511 per tax return. The area around the West Station in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean is the poorest with an average of €15,943 per tax return, writes brusselnieuws.be.

The figures, which date from 2012, follow an agreement between the Directorate General of Statistics and Economic Information (DGSEI), part of the FPS Economy, and BISA, allowing the Institute to publish detailed information about resident income tax­­ per commune for the first time.

In addition to Le Vivier d'Oie, the Brussels commune of Uccle is home to two more of the Capital Region's wealthiest neighbourhoods: the Royal Observatory and Fort Jaco districts, where residents earn on average €48,000 and €45,000 per year, respectively. In Uccle's nearby Calevoet and Moensberg neighbourhoods, by contrast, the residents earn on average €28,500 annually.

Brussels' poorer communities are mainly situated around the canal zone in Molenbeek and Anderlecht, such as the city's poorest communities Cureghem-Bara, the Marolles and the West Station, with respectively €16,747, €16,498 and €15,943 per tax return.

In the municipality of Ixelles, the gap between districts is even greater, with residents of the neighbourhood around the lakes earning on average €41,250 per tax return. That's nearly twice as much as in the nearby Flagey-Malibran district (€21,511).

The statistics show an overall regional average of €26,463 per tax return in 2012.
