Brussels tram driver 'has 50 driving convictions'

21:37 17/10/2017

A man convicted of 50 driving offences is still working as a Brussels tram driver, it has emerged.

The driver has refused on eight occasions to surrender his driving licence, Het Laatste Nieuws reports.

Most of the convictions were for speeding. At his latest court hearing, a judge in Halle said on Monday: "This man is a serial reoffender. It is frightening that he can be found every day on the roads, working for the Stib."

A Stib spokeswoman said the company had opened an internal investigation.

"Employees must provide proof of no previous convictions (when hired)," she said. "Their employment contract requires a relationship of trust. A worker who is convicted should tell their employer."
