Brussels to tighten security during World Cup matches
Belgium
10:00 20/06/2014
Brussels Mayor Yvan Mayeur has announced tightened security in the capital during Belgium’s next World Cup match, following the death of a football supporter in central Brussels on Tuesday evening, reports La Dernière Heure.
Mayeur told the paper: “We will deploy more stewards and we will place two tarpaulins on the lions [in front of the Bourse] to remind people that while partying is great, partying safely is even better. We cannot, though, cover all the statues in Brussels.”
A football supporter died after falling from one of the lion statues by the Bourse while out celebrating the Belgium-Algeria match on Tuesday.
Belgium’s next game in Brazil will be against Russia on Sunday at 18.00.
