Brussels taxi strike to disrupt traffic on 27 March

20:42 20/03/2018

Taxi drivers in Brussels are planning to halt traffic with a strike next Tuesday, 27 March.

Representatives from the CSC trade union - which represents about 1,000 drivers - have called the strike after they were disappointed with the results of a consulation meeting about the city's new taxi plan on Tuesday.

CSC secretary Philippe Lescot said Brussels mobility minister Pascal Smet was "not listening to us", adding: "We will take tough action."

The union disagrees with the idea that the capital's taxi plan will put Uber and other ride-sharing drivers on the same level as traditional taxi drivers.

They are also worried about plans to raise the maximum number of taxi drivers allowed in the Brussels region, saying it could harm drivers' livelihoods and profitability.

Drivers from other European cities will also take part in the Brussels protest against the practices of Uber.
