Brussels socialists appeal for bike motorway

13:30 14/09/2012

Pascal Smet (pictured) of the sp.a (Flemish socialists) would like to see more Brussels residents and commuters on two wheels. His idea is to encourage cycling in the capital city with the construction of a "bicycle motorway". The so-called Flat Track intends to persuade both Brussels residents and commuters to leave the car at home and take the bike instead, by making cycling paths that are flat, safe and easy to manoeuvre. The 19 infrastructure projects needed to achieve Flat Track would cost an estimated €60 million, equal to the regional bicycle budget for a period of five years – an “achievable ambition”, according to Smet.
