Brussels signs deal with telecoms operators for 5G

22:54 23/07/2018

Brussels has made a first step towards introducing 5G mobile internet from 2020 - after the region's government signed an agreement with telecoms operators.

The protocol "lays the groundwork" for Brussels to become the first Belgian city to implement the ultra-fast technology, according to a spokesman for Brussels minister-president Rudi Vervoort.

By signing the memorandum of understanding, mobile operators have committed to finding the most efficient way possible of introducing 5G while limiting residents' exposure to further electro-magnetic radiation.

It includes a commitment to carry out public consultations and information sessions before any transmitters are upgraded or new ones built. Mobile operators have also agreed to work closely with employment agency Actiris to source the necessary labour to build the new 5G network.

5G technology will offer speeds up to 10 times faster than the current 4G, opening up new possibilities for connected devices, including driverless cars.

The European Commission asked each member state to pick a pilot city for the launch of 5G. Telecoms minister Alexander De Croo said earlier this year: "Brussels was one of the last cities in Europe to introduce 4G. We cannot allow that to happen a second time, because it would have significant economic consequences."
