Brussels schools overcrowded

10:35 29/08/2013

Schools in Brussels, from nursery and primary to secondary education, are increasingly prone to overcrowding. By 2020, some 42,000 additional places will need to be created in order to accommodate the growing population. This is according to a study published today by the Brussels Studies Institute (BSI), titled Education in Brussels: a complex crisis. Demographic growth provides the main explanation for this increasing need for space, with an estimated 60% of the world's population - some five billion people - expected to be living in cities by 2020. The effects of this urbanization will be most greatly felt in Brussels primary schools, where an additional 20,000 places are to be provided by 2020 . In secondary schools, the number is 12,500, and in nursery schools 9,500, according to BSI.

Even 30 children in a primary class is too many. State primary schools include children with a diverse range of special needs. State schools are always being told they need to get as good as independent schools. For this to happen they need to be better resourced and have fewer children than the independent schools given they cater for a wider range of needs.

Governments have simply not resourced State primary schools well enough and it seems things are getting worse rather than better.

Its really hard to handle children at times and when it comes to have a school which is overcrowding it gets more harder. Brussels is a big place and have some great educational institutions and this act will damage its image. I personally taught in brussels school of international studies.
