Brussels metro to test free wifi starting this summer
The Brussels metro station Porte de Hal will be the first station to test out free wifi on the metro, with initial tests starting this summer. About a quarter of the metro stations should be equipped with free wifi by the end of the year, writes Bruzz.
After Porte de Hal, the rest of the stations in the Small Ring will be equipped with free wifi. By the end of 2016, 25% of the stations should be online. The rest will follow in 2017, says Brussels mobility minister Pascal Smet in La Capitale.
Smet added that the purpose of the free wifi on the metro is not just for passengers to check Facebook, but to avoid communication problems such as those that occurred during the terror attacks of 22 March. "If the mobile phone network is overloaded, people can still use WhatsApp, for example, to contact family,” said Smet.
