The 9th edition of Brussels by Lights  - a series of themed illuminations in shopping streets around the city – is shining a spotlight on the Schuman area in a bid to boost business in the area.

Officially opening the light trail and the Sky Castle interactive sound and light experience on Tuesday evening, Brussels-City councillor for the economy Fabian Maingain (Défi), said the attractions were an invitation to people to come back to the area.

“After a dark year for the EU district, it was important to put the lights on in the quarter. People can discover the Sky Castle, but also the shops and the area, which is one of the most beautiful in the city of Brussels.”

The glowing inflatable installation, located on the Schuman esplanade, is open until 1 January. “It’s an immersive experience that you can walk through and hear different sounds by artists,” said Maingain. “Afterwards, you can follow the lights and discover all the new lighting in the area.”

The Brussels by Lights trail consists of outdoor sparkling installations, twinkling Christmas trees and fairy light-festooned streets in the Jean Monnet quarter (Rue Stevin, Rue Franklin, Rue Archimède and Boulevard Charlemagne), plus the Petite Rue de la Loi and Square Marguerite. The annual seasonal event is a collaboration between the City of Brussels and the Schuman business district.

An additional attraction to the area is the Schuman Lights Up marquee (pictured), installed on the roundabout of the busy intersection. Until 14 December, it’s hosting a packed programme of themed events celebrating culture, food, wellbeing and other topics, all aimed at locals as well as the international community.
