Brussels is the largest offender of smoking ban
Brussels cafés and restaurants are Belgium's largest offenders when it comes to ignoring the total smoking ban that went into force five years ago, writes De Standaard. The hospitality industry prohibits smoking in its establishments since July 2011, except in designated smoking rooms. Figures shared with De Tijd reveal that the Brussels-Capital Region scores poorly during police checks.
Across Belgium, infringements of the smoking ban were discovered in 17% of the inspections over the past five years, but there are major regional differences. While only 10.5% of all checks occurred in the Brussels-Capital Region, one-quarter of these revealed an infringement.
There were a total of 29,494 inspections carried out across Belgium over the last five years: 3,000 in the Brussels-Capital Region, 9,950 in Wallonia and 16,600 in Flanders.
