Brussels hotel fire: 179 guests evacuated, one woman in intensive care
179 people had to be evacuated from the Sofitel hotel off of Avenue Louise on Wednesday morning due to a fire.
The fire began around 3.15 and was under control a little after 4.00. There was dense smoke, causing one 49-year-old woman to be taken to the hospital, where she is in a critical condition in intensive care. Two others also suffered from smoke inhalation.
The fire reportedly began in the kitchen on the first floor, according to Walter Derieuw, spokesman for the Brussels firefighters. The flames spread easily due to a nearby stairwell.
According to guests, the fire started when a small heater exploded.
The firefighters had to rescue two people using their ladder and evacuated the rest. Afterward, the guests were relocated to The Hotel across the boulevard.
Although authorities allowed re-opening of the hotel on Wednesday night, management of the Sofitel held off and plan to reopen next Monday.
