Brussels gets new 10k race

12:59 23/02/2015

Brussels can add another running competition to its name, the 10km of Brussels. The first event is scheduled for 19 April, starting from King Baudouin Stadium, with a finish line at Palais 12concert hall  in the Heysel district in the north of the city, reports brusselnieuws.be. The new 10km race has nothing to do with the 20km of Brussels, which takes place every May.

The competition is organised by the Memorial Van Damme and Golazo Sports, and is a high point of the Memorial Van Damme athletics competition, which is held in the stadium every year in late August or early September. “Of the 50 fastest 10km races ever run, 24 of those took place in Brussels," it reads on the race website.

The organisers aim for a dramatic end to the race, leading runners under the Atomium and through to a spectacular indoor finish at Palais 12, where they will be greeted with a music and light show.

I think with need more investment in public spaces for sports practices instead promoting the 'bussiness' of being-healthy...

Let's hope this new race is better policed than the 20 km race in May where I have seen: bicycles amongst the runners, many runners with homemade "numbers" on their chests (so not legitimate), dogs on leads running amongst the runners, and many more infringements of the rules. However, one also sees policemen standing along the side but nothing done to those who mock the rules. I actually asked a policemen to intervene when 3 cyclists wove themselves amongst the runners. Policeman's response: "Je ne peux rien faire." Typical. I was incensed.
