Brussels Film Festival faces axe due to funding cut

23:32 08/03/2017

This year's Brussels Film Festival is in danger of being cancelled after its subsidies were withdrawn.

The Brussels-Capital Region and the Wallonia-Brussels Federation will not fund this year's event, according to general manager Ivan Corbisier. "To completely suppress our subsidy is incomprehensible," Corbisier said.

The Brussels Film Festival started in 1974. The Brussels-Capital Region has been a partner of the festival since its creation. Now, 43 years later, the 2017 festival that is scheduled for 16-22 June could be called off.

The festival costs about €400,000 to put on, including accommodation and meals for the participants. The Brussels region has contributed €100,000 in the past. The subsidy from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation was cut last year from €70,000 to €35,000.

Other partners of the Brussels Film Festival include Wallonia-Brussels International, COCOF (French Community Commission) and the municipality of Ixelles.

Time for private sources and other municipalities to step in. Plus: I would think that it is not a good idea to schedule the film festival during student exams if you want young people to participate.
