Brussels conducts first wildlife census in 15 years

10:53 20/02/2015

Environmental organisation Leefmilieu Brussel is urging residents to do some animal spotting in the capital, and to take photos of the wildlife with their smartphone. The photos can then be easily transferred to the organisation via a mobile app. In this way, the Brussels-Capital Region hopes to gain insight into its animal population, reports brusselnieuws.be

The region’s first mammal count in 15 years was launched with the help of nature protection organisations Natuurpunt and Natagora. The organisers are asking people who have spotted a mammal, such as a fox, deer or squirrel, to share their observations on the website.

Those with a photo of the animal are encouraged to submit it by way of a specially developed app, after registering online.

The results of the two-year study should provide the region with valuable information about the animal population, in order to determine which animals need more protection and which animals are thriving.
