Brussels castle sells for €2.6 million in public auction

If you have a few extra euros lying about, you might think about checking out the Biddit real estate site, which is run by Belgian’s notary association. A public auction this week on the site saw the Jolimont castle in Watermael-Boitsfort sell for €2.6 million.

It’s a record price for a property on the Belgian website, which runs only auctions. And what a property it is. The 1,500 square-metres of living space on Rue Middelbourg includes stables, a tower, a chapel and an artist’s studio. A one-hectare garden surrounds the property.

It is, however, a bit run down. Since it is a protected monument, the buyer will be required to carry out extensive renovations. The online bidding for the property started at €1.75 million and climbed all the way to €2.6 million.

Biddit launched just a year ago, and admits that this is an exception sale. The average price for a property on the site is €217,500.
